Spelling is a key focus in all classes across the federation. Reception and year one children are following the letters and sounds spelling programme. Years 2-6 are all following the no-nonsense spelling programme. The children will be taught a specific pattern/rule and given the opportunity to apply these rules within their written work without needing to be tested formally each week. We do not deem formal spelling tests to be the most effective use of learning time (often children learn spellings for such tests but do not retain them or apply them to written work) although we may still send words, rules and patterns home for children to learn throughout the year (particularly those which children should be expected to know for their end of year tests). We are trying to teach children to use dictionaries effectively in school to check their work and search for spellings, any opportunity to reinforce this at home rather than learning words for a formal test would be greatly appreciated, even if done as a game or a challenge.
We are always trying to improve our provision for children and moving away from formalised spelling tests is part of this as well as following a scheme that is used consistently throughout the whole school.
